Winter Scenes 1. Leaves, the color of old wood, won’t let go, not even at the height of the storm, not even when snow flakes ram white against them. These are the days when crows huddle like old men in the neighbor’s covered garden. They complain loudly. The weather has made them all Democrats until a stout Republican cat comes and chases them all away, then sleekly looks for love in all the wrong places. 2. Sparrows slide down the drain-pipe, chatter noisily and do it all over again. I’m sure they have a secret society, take oaths, and speak in an exotic language only they know. Symbols can be seen all over town if you know what to look for: certain topiaries in circular shapes, bell towers, and roofs over maternity wards. An old monkish bird once whispered in my ear: one leaf blowing, one foot hopping, one wing flying. (c)2005 (Message edited by Kathryn on December 18, 2005) |

the opening lines dragged me wholeheartedly into the rest of the poem and though I dont fully understand the political references I chuckled. 'and speak in an exotic language only they know' could this be simplified to speak in code?? I tripped over it. I loved the rest no I mean really, I liked it alot, its the first poem structured this way that I have wanted to take the time to really read...then read again just because I enjoyed it, thanks. |

Love the end of S1, the cat and love. Here one leave blowing, one foot hopping, one wing flying. spell leaf, but also change to one leaf blows, one foot hops, one wind flies with line breaks. Smiles. Gary

Kathryn, S2 has a Zen-like mystery. I love the topiaries and the secret signals. Your imagination is so rich. E |

Karen, well, I thought I knew the political references at the time. My mother is a Democrat and she's always sending me all this stuff through the e-mail. Me, I walk the middle road, hate labels except to make people laugh, but not derogatory ones, of course. Thanks for the suggestion. Gary, I guess you never heard of the Zen koan, one hand clapping. I'll change leave to leaf. Thanks. Zephyr, Thankyou. I'm sure this secret society has chapters world wide. E, so is yours. I just love to let go with it. Thankyou. Debbie, thankyou; I'm rather fond of them myself. My best to everyone, Kathryn |
